Planning a Magical Party for Boys

A magic party is one of the mostexciting themes for boys ages four through ten. Here are some easy ways you can magically transform an ordinary party into a wonderful event.

Boy Magician

Magical Invitations

Set the mood and build excitement for your party with magic themed invitations. You can create a very clever homemade invitation with a supply of colored construction paper, magic markers and glue. Cut a silhouette of a top hat from the black paper. Next, apply glue to the bottom and side edges of the hat and stick it on the purple paper to form a pocket. Using the white paper, cut out a pair of bunny ears and glue it to the edge of your invitation information card. Place the card inside the top hat with the bunny ears poking out. When the children receive the invitation they'll know that they are in for a very special party.

Magical Decorations.

With just some plastic top hats, some inexpensive magic wands and some magic themed dinnerware and tablecloths you can easily create a magical mood. Complement the decor with purple, black and gold balloons, streamers and wall decals. Dim the lights just a bit and for added effect consider using a party safe fog machine. Place a crystal ball and some battery-operated candles around the room. Order some vintage posters of magicians performing illusions and place one on the front door. Play the soundtrack from Disney's Fantasia, Harry Potter, or Ghostbusters to add to the ambience.

Magical Costume

Your little boy can dress up like a master magician with a simple cape, top hat, false mustache and goatee. If your child has developed some skill as a magician you may want to suggest that he entertain his friends with a few simple magic tricks.

Magical Games.

Many traditional birthday party games can be transformed into magic themed games with just a little bit of creativity. Pin the Tail on the Donkey can become Pin the Tail on the Magic Bunny with a simple drawing of a rabbit on poster paper and along with a bag of cotton balls and tape.

Create a magical scavenger hunt with a deck of cards. Hide all or some of the cards throughout the party area. Give the boy who can find the Joker a special prize.

For a fun arts and crafts activity help the children create their own magic wands and wizards hats. To make a magic wand get a set of wooden dowels or long plastic straws, some glue glitter and tinsel.  Let the kids decorate the wands with all sorts of crazy things like feathers and stickers too. A wizard's conical hat just requires some poster board, tape, scissors, magic markers and stickers.

The birthday cake is the centerpiece and can be decorated to match the decor theme of the magic party. Add a pair of bunny ears to a vanilla frosted cake. Trick candles are a must for a fun surprise.

Magic Show.

The highlight of any boys birthday party is a professional magic show in which the birthday boy gets to be star of the show. You can find a birthday party magician by searching online but a better way is to ask your friends and family to refer you to someone that they have seen perform.  Be sure the magician that you hire specializes in children's parties. Some magicians are really good with adults but terrible with kids so you should always ask for references. Many performers have video clips on their websites that you can check out. If your child is old enough to help you may want to let him watch the videos with you so he can decide which magician he wants at his party.

The key to a successful magic themed party is organization and the same holds true for your party's entertainment. When it's time for the show to start the children are sure to be excited. Help set the stage for successful magic show by giving each child is or her own seat rather than having them sit on the floor.  This will help keep the children from pushing and shoving each other. Plus, the more comfortable the children are the easier it will be for them to pay attention to the show.

Since younger boys have shorter attention spans than older children keep the magic show under 45 minutes for children under the age of five. Remember that the magician is there to entertain your guest and not to supervise or discipline.  If some of the children start to misbehave it's really important that the grown-ups step in right away to correct the children's behavior.

After the magic show is over it's the perfect time to serve ice cream and cake. Think carefully about letting the birthday boy opened his presents at the event if there are many very young children present. Younger children may get upset when they see another child with a shiny new present.

Send off the children with magical party goodies bag. In addition to some candy you can include one or two inexpensive magic tricks as long as they are appropriate for the ages of the children who are attending the party. Ask your magician to supply you with some appropriate magic tricks. Some magicians may even teach the children how to do each trick as part of the show.
