Theme Parties for Sports Fans: Football Birthday PartiesIf you’ve got a child, friend or family member who’s a football nut, why not throw them a themed birthday party? Football birthday parties aren’t hard to put together and are a perfect way to recognize the unique individuality of the guest of honor. Start with your invitations. One favorite trick is to cut plain white card stock into football jersey or helmet shapes, add the colors of the birthday boy’s favorite team, and address each invitation by hand. As an alternative, you could cut the birthday invitations in pennant shapes and use big block letters to ask each of your guests to come to the party. The next step is to select your football birthday party decorations. Use the colors of the birthday boy’s team as your theme. Hang team jerseys, handmade signs cheering the team on and club memorabilia around the party room and outside your house. Supplement with signs nominating the guest of honor for Super Bowl MVP as well as team hats, posters of star players and anything else football-themed that you may have on hand. In terms of the party menu, football-shaped cakes are an obvious favorite, but you can dig a little deeper to come up with something a little more creative. “Call-the-play” sandwiches are a fun idea. Basically, spread out a selection of breads, meats, cheeses and sandwich toppings, assigning each item a number. Party guests can shout out their orders as though calling a football play, indicating by number what kind of bread, meat and toppings they want on their sandwiches. For snacks and finger foods, stick with Super Bowl party classics like nachos and salsa, chips and dip, pork rinds, chicken wings and pizza. You can really have some fun with the football birthday party games. If you want the kids to earn some of the calories they’re going to take in once the party starts, you can begin the day with low-intensity football drills like running passing plays or throwing a spiral through the hole of a car tire suspended on a tree branch. As an alternative, have a fun game of flag or tag football before the party starts. As a variant of “hot potato,” you can get the party guests to sit around in a circle with a soft toy football, which they pass around to one another while music plays. Whoever is left holding the football when the music stops is “out.” Keep playing until only one person remains. Finally, keep the football theme alive by renting videos of spectacular highlights, football bloopers and sports-themed movies. Remember the Titans is a long-standing favorite at football birthday parties. A football birthday party is an inexpensive way to make your son, brother or friend feel like a champion on his special day. With proper planning, the day is sure to be a touchdown. |
